Where The Idea Started
I figured I would go back and show off where I started and what the first coherent vision of the OnlyUp Candle looked like.
Initially I was working with an LED string and I thought it would be cool to have the string move throughout the day and have it reflect the actual line chart of a stock. Although making it work was difficult to begin with and the thought of producing any meaningful amount of them seemed like it would've been nearly impossible. I might go back to that idea eventually but that was when I switched over to finding a different abstract way of showing price/price changes.
My main gripe with other stock tickers is that they try very hard to be as useful as possible and frankly I think there is no point in that since people will still default to checking their phone or computer for the best information or to actually trade. That is why I figured I would cut down on the complexity of the display and focus on making it look cool as an addition to a desk/office space.
From there candlestick charts seemed like the obvious thing to mimic and I made the first sketch. Initially I thought that I would add a little OLED screen to show the ticker logo because I thought I would make the main screen look like it is slowly filling up with light. I switched pretty quickly though since if the point is a clean and simple look it is better just to implement scrolling text.
I think I'll share how I went about with the electronics next time
